It is gratifying that 2003 graduating civil engineering class has pulled off a first of it's kind by completing the Alta de Lisboa project: a major team based multidisciplinary design project in another continent. The design included innovative ideas for structural, transportation and environmental problems. Two dozen students and several professors, under the leadership of Department Head Professor Tom Brown visited the site on two occasions. We are indeed grateful for the support and sponsorship of Mr. Joeseph Leung, P.Eng, Vice President of Marquis Development of Calgary as well as the Dr. Manuel Fernandes, Chairman of SGAL, Engineer Fransisco Borges, Dr. Ambrose So, Director of STDM,and Mr. Choi Manhin, Director of Estoril Sol for their outstanding support for the project.

The involvement of our 4th year students in the Alta de Lisboa project represented a unique opportunity for them to be involved in a major international project that permitted them to apply the knowledge and skills that they had acquired during their undergraduate programme at the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½. Further, it gave them an opportunity to see how their knowledge and skills were equally applicable in a Portuguese environment as they would be in the corresponding Canadian project.

As a senator, I am really glad to be the broker of this innovative project for civil engineering students. This project provided many challenges to them and gave them real life experience. For the students, the project is ambitious because of its magnitude, the multi-disciplinary scope. We also want the students to learn the cultural differences and to respect those differences as they work through this project. I'm confident that at least one idea from our students will be accepted for integration into the overall plan and will make our sponsorship all worthwhile.
