Class of 2019: 95 nursing students receive degrees at convocation ceremony in Qatar
Ninety-five nursing students earned their undergraduate or graduate nursing degrees at the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar鈥檚 2019 convocation ceremony at the Qatar National Convention Centre on June 23. Professors, family members, dignitaries from Qatar and Canada, and valued partners from Qatar鈥檚 health and education sectors celebrated 93 Bachelor of Nursing (BN) and two Master of Nursing (MN) graduates at the convocation.
The ceremony marked the 10th聽graduating class of BN students and fifth graduating class of MN students. This year鈥檚 graduates include 11 Qatari and 77 non-Qatari females along with seven non-Qatari males. Along with the university鈥檚 other alumni, the new cohort of graduates will contribute to the success of the health goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Health Strategy 2018-2022 and will join a sustainable workforce that ensures the complex health-care needs of the country are met.
During the celebrations, the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar also recognized two graduates with the university鈥檚 highest academic distinction, the Gold and Silver medallions. The Gold Medal for academic achievement in the BN program was awarded to Sharifat Atinuke Makinde, while Joycee Mathew Kurian won the Silver Medal for academic achievement in the post-diploma BN program.
His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Khalid Bin Jabor Al Thani, founder and chairman of the Qatar Cancer Society, chairman of the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar Board of Trustees, and convocation guest speaker, honoured the graduates鈥 achievement during his address:
鈥淚 am very pleased to congratulate the graduates of the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar. The need for highly educated and skilled nurses in Qatar is increasing every year. You are entering the nursing profession at an important time for our nation and I know you will meet the challenges of your task.
"You have embarked on an important journey that will not only change you, but also change Qatar. You will become part of the fabric that binds our health-care system together. You will work to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. As nurses, you will be the most visible member of the health-care system. The work you will do will have a direct and real impact on the health of Qatar鈥檚 population.鈥
Dignitaries from Canada in attendance included Deborah Yedlin, chancellor of the 草莓污视频导航 and Dr. Ed McCauley, president and vice-chancellor.
McCauley noted in his remarks to the audience: 鈥淕reat universities create new knowledge with purpose. They develop solutions to difficult challenges. And they deliver bold innovations that improve the quality of life for all members of their community. This has been the guiding vision for the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar. We are committed to advancing nursing in Qatar and helping to meet this country鈥檚 vital health-care workforce needs.鈥
With the completion of the 2019 convocation ceremony, a total of 651 students have earned their BN degrees from the university while 56 have graduated from the MN program. Qatari nationals currently make up approximately 16 per cent of the university鈥檚 alumni network. Raising the level of local nursing talent via its dedicated academic programs, the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar is advancing the overall performance and transformation of the health-care system.

Over 400 students are currently registered in the 草莓污视频导航鈥檚 BN and MN programs. The 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar offers two paths to a BN degree 鈥斅燼 four-year program for qualified high school graduates, and a two-year program for nurses holding diplomas in nursing from recognized institutions. The university鈥檚 MN degree is designed in collaboration with Qatar鈥檚 nursing community to further develop leaders in the profession.
Established in 2007, the 草莓污视频导航 in Qatar is the country鈥檚 only Canadian university and exclusive provider of nursing higher education; a distinction that enhances the university鈥檚 commitment to advancing nursing as a profession in Qatar. Accredited in Canada and adapted to the local culture, the university鈥檚 curriculum provides its nursing students with the knowledge and expertise that allows them to become fully integrated leaders in Qatar鈥檚 health-care sector.
