Dr. Maureen Topps appointed new CEO of the Medical Council of Canada
After more than 30 years in academic medicine, the majority with the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM), Dr. Maureen Topps is stepping down as Senior Associate Dean, Education effective Sept. 30, 2018. She has accepted a new role as the CEO of the Medical Council of Canada.
Dr. Topps has served as the Sr. Assoc. Dean, Education since 2017. Prior to that she was the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education. And before that, an associate professor with the Department of Family Medicine and Executive Director of the Alberta International Medical Graduate Program.
In 2005, after serving as one of the earliest rural clinical preceptors in family medicine at the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ and as program director for the family medicine residency training program, Dr. Topps became the inaugural Associate Dean of Postgraduate Education at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).
With extensive experience in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education, Dr. Topps has been recognized with a Family Medicine Preceptor of the Year Award and an Award of Excellence for Long Term Education Contributions (²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½). She was also part of the team that received an Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC)/Deloitte Public Sector Leadership Award for Education - Gold Award (Northern Ontario School of Medicine).
Dr. Topps served for many years on the Accreditation Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is currently Chair of the International Program Review Committee.
She was also heavily involved in the Future of Medical Education in Canada – Postgraduate Project as a steering committee member, as the lead on several international consultations and continues this work through service on implementation groups.
