Flag lowering ceremony at ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Message to ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ community from President McCauley

Yesterday, we had our first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ceremony with reflections from Elders and a reaffirmation of our commitment toward reconciliation and healing. It was an important day, marked with the memories of survivors of residential schools sharing their experience, and a moment of silence as we lowered the national, provincial, ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ and inter-Pride flags.

This solemn event was hosted by Dr. Michael Hart, vice-provost of Indigenous Engagement,Ìýand supported by the entire senior leadership team.ÌýChancellor Deborah Yedlin,ÌýProvost Teri Balser and I were honoured to lend our voices to the importance of this morning's flag lowering.ÌýWe are all deeply committed to the open-hearted learning and listening that is required to gain a true understanding of the trauma caused by the residential school system and ongoing racism. As individuals, leaders and as part of our university community, we must take an active role in reconciliation and decolonization.Ìý

As you Ìýof the ceremony, pay close attention to the words from our Elders, which are important for all of us to hear.Ìý

Thank you,

Ed McCauley
President and Vice-Chancellor
