Robot elbow invention launches biomedical engineering student on a journey
When Jacob George and his teammates from the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program walked into a make-a-thon in Cochrane last summer, he thought they鈥檇 build something cool and end up helping someone out. What the MSc student didn鈥檛 know is that the听(TOM) event would be just a first step in his education in entrepreneurship.
鈥淭he format of the event is somebody who knows someone with a disability is on one side and a team of engineers is on the other side, and they get matched together,鈥 says George. That鈥檚 how he met Calvenn Tsuu. 鈥淗is father-in-law had a stroke in rural China and it鈥檚 hard to get access to health-care facilities so we wanted to build something to help him do his rehab at home.鈥
The team created a robotic elbow device that helps stroke patients stretch, move and strengthen their arms, because most people who have a stroke suffer arm impairment. 鈥淲e made up our own individual designs and realized that they all kind of sucked, but there were parts that were good, so we made an amalgamation that ended up being our prototype,鈥 says George. 鈥淭hen we went to a machine shop and stayed there for three days and just built this thing from zero to 100.鈥
A prototype in hand, the team 鈥 Isaac Acosta and Riley Booth, both BME MSc students, along with George; Kartikeya Murari, associate professor at Schulich School of Engineering; Dr. Sean Dukelow of the Cumming School of Medicine, and Tsuu, a mechanical engineer 鈥 competed in the听Tenet i2c听competition at the Cumming School of Medicine.
鈥淭hey were up against experienced professors with hundreds of thousands of dollars of seed money and they made it to the final round,鈥 says Kathryn Simone, a BME PhD student and organizer of Calgary鈥檚 TOM event (the only one in Canada). 鈥淚t鈥檚 really impressive that they started off with a really technical project but it quickly became an entrepreneurial endeavour.鈥
TENET i2c taught George about starting a business, marketing and that branding fundamental 鈥 having an easily pronounceable company name. 鈥淲e needed something to fill in on a form. It was a few minutes before the deadline.鈥 So they combined rehab and able for 鈥淩ehable鈥 but have since dropped the H, for 鈥淩e-able.鈥澨
They also received clear, simple goals for building a business. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the scariest thing as an entrepreneur because you just don鈥檛 know what to do next,鈥 says George. 鈥淚 always wanted to be an entrepreneur but I had no idea how or what to do.鈥 He鈥檚 learning fast. The team is in the听Summer Incubator Program听at the听, participated in the听Startup Showcase听and came in second in this year鈥檚听.
George will finish his MSc in about a year. He鈥檚 using high-resolution computed tomography to study how ankle strength may determine whether someone is likely to suffer a spinal fracture. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a versatile guy and a pleasure to have in the lab,鈥 says Steven Boyd, his supervisor and the director of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health.
The 草莓污视频导航鈥檚 multidisciplinary听research strategy听is focused on developing solutions for pressing health challenges in disease and injury prevention, diagnosis and treatments. We are also applying systems engineering principles to continuously improve the health system.
