SAPL alum named outstanding young planner by national organization

Canadian Institute of Planners recognizes Ben Bailey's efforts in city building

SAPL alum wins CIP President's Award for Young Planners Provided by Ben Bailey

SAPL alum Ben Bailey (MPlan'14) has been named the recipient of the . Bailey is an urban planner with Calgary-based CivicWorks and serves as an appointee to the Calgary Urban Design Review Panel. He is a committed volunteer in the city's Beltline neighbourhood, and continues to be involved at SAPL as a guest lecturer and reviewer.

"His knowledge as a planner, his principles, and his professionalism and good humour make him very effective in acting on behalf of the community," SAPL professor Dr. Bev Sandalack, PhD, explains. "This is hard work and a testament to his dedication. I consider him to be one of the professional colleagues who I respect the most, and trust to act responsibly and always in the best interests of the community."

The award recognizes outstanding professional success and achievement by a young Canadian planner under the age of 35. The award recipient is selected by the current President of the Canadian Institute of Planners with the endorsement of the Board of Directors.  

"I have been astounded by Ben’s evolution, effectiveness, and achievements in a relatively short amount of time," continues Sandalack. Indeed, Bailey's reputation for design integrity and great city building has earned him five planning and urban design awards in the past five years. "The work he is doing is a strong reflection of our unique form-based MPlan program and its success in building highly capable professional planners."
