Introduction
The 草莓污视频导航 Faculty of Nursing was established in 1969 as an independent unit within the University administrative framework, having equivalent status with other faculties of the University. The purpose of the Faculty is to prepare, at the undergraduate level, nurses who are qualified to assume first level positions in professional nursing, and at the graduate level, nurses who are qualified to assume leadership positions in professional nursing. It is recognized that professional nursing services are required in a variety of community health agencies, and learning experiences are provided for students in a number of significant areas. |
Pattern
The Faculty of Nursing offers a two-year baccalaureate accelerated track program, a three- to four-year baccalaureate regular track program, a two-year post diploma baccalaureate program, and an on-site program at Medicine Hat College, at the completion of which the student is awarded a Bachelor of Nursing degree. The Faculty also offers a two-year Master of Nursing program and a PhD program (refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies calendar). |
Objectives
BN Program at the 草莓污视频导航 and BN Program at Medicine Hat College | Upon completion of the BN program, the graduate will be able to: 路 practice in a variety of settings including health care agencies/institutions, the home and the community 路 consider factors influencing health and illness 路 use knowledge, critical thinking and clinical skills for making sound judgments and providing competent care 路 act to promote health, prevent disease, and care for individuals with acute, long-term, and anticipated terminal illnesses 路 communicate effectively and develop professional relationships with clients 路 practice with cultural awareness and sensitivity to the influences of racial and ethnic diversity on health 路 participate in the advancement of nursing practice through research 路 possess leadership abilities and organizational skills that make an effective contribution as a member of the health care team 路 integrate changing technologies into health care 路 be committed to the pursuit of knowledge, lifelong learning and professional development 路 have a professional sense of social responsibility and be an active participant in influencing health, health care policy, and reform |
Post Diploma BN Program | Upon completion of the Post Diploma Bachelor of Nursing program, the graduate will be able to: 路 synthesize concepts from the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences with nursing knowledge in the practice of nursing. 路 demonstrate caring in nursing practice. 路 apply the nursing process based upon conceptual frameworks of nursing. 路 provide nursing care throughout the life cycles of individuals, families, groups and communities. 路 demonstrate independent, interdependent and collaborative roles in the practice of nursing to promote, maintain and restore health of individuals, families, groups and communities, and when life is no longer sustainable, to assist in coping with the dying process. 路 demonstrate accountability for the professional practice of nursing within current legal, ethical and professional standards. 路 apply research findings in the practice of and for the advancement of nursing. 路 accept responsibility for self-directed, continuous professional development. |
Opportunities
Career opportunities in nursing are many and varied. Staff nurse positions are found in acute care (hospital) settings, extended care, home care, and community/rural settings. Nurses are also employed in occupational health nursing and in various government services such as outpost nursing, penitentiaries, international nursing or the Canadian Armed Forces. Once you are a Registered Nurse, you are eligible to work anywhere in Canada. |
Student Affairs
Undergraduate Nursing Society (U.N.S.) | The U.N.S. is a society consisting of elected representatives from the Nursing student body. U.N.S. serves students by providing faculty-student liaisons, information on current nursing issues, graduation and yearbook funding, social functions and a support network for Nursing students. |
Resources
The Faculty of Nursing is located on the first and second floors of the Professional Faculties Building on the main campus of the 草莓污视频导航. The Faculty houses a Learning Centre which is designed as an interactive environment to advance excellence in Nursing. Within it, the acquisition of knowledge and skills is facilitated through a variety of resources which link nursing education, practice and research. A multi-media laboratory is also available for student use. Courses in the Faculty of Nursing may be provided through computer based education, independent self-study and distance learning modalities as well as by the more usual classroom and clinical teaching strategies. Nursing is a practice based profession. Clinical courses or "practice of nursing" courses occur in each session beginning in Winter of first year. Students complete their clinical experiences in a variety of institutional and community settings, including rural and urban centres, with a variety of client populations. Examples of facilities and agencies utilized by the Faculty of Nursing include: Alberta Children's Hospital, Alberta Hospital Ponoka, Alexandra Community Health Centre, Calgary Correctional Centre, Calgary Health Services, Claresholm Hospital, Colonel Belcher Hospital, Foothills Hospital, Home Care, High River Hospital, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview Hospital, Stoney Tribal Health Centre, Strathmore Public Health Unit, Wood's Homes, etc. Many other community health agencies contribute in a variety of ways to the programs of the Faculty of Nursing. Out of region and international placements are arranged on an individual basis. |
