The Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE) in the Schulich School of Engineering has the overall responsibility for the coordination and delivery of a comprehensive postgraduate program specialization in the multi-disciplinary field of environmental engineering. All five engineering departments participate in delivering the Faculty-wide environmental engineering graduate programmes leading to the Master of Engineering (MEng), the Master of Science (MSc), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

Applications for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies should be submitted to one of the engineering departments that best matches the applicant's undergraduate and/or postgraduate academic training.

1. Degrees and Specializations Offered

Degrees in Environmental Engineering programme of study:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Master of Science (MSc)

Master of Engineering (MEng)

2. Admission Requirements

In addition to the Faculty requirements, the following admission requirements apply to Environmental Engineering programmes of study:

Master of Engineering and Master of Science

A Bachelor's degree in engineering.

Note: Applicants with applied science degrees may be considered, but additional undergraduate engineering courses may be required.

Doctor of Philosophy

A Master's degree in engineering, preferably in environmental engineering or equivalent.

Note: Transfer to the doctoral program without completing the Master's degree may be approved for exceptional students.

3. Application Deadline

Deadlines for submission of complete applications for students with international transcripts:

15 May for September admission

15 September for January admission

15 December for May admission

Deadlines for submission of complete applications for students with Canadian and US transcripts:

15 June for September admission

15 October for January admission

15 March for May admission

4. Advanced Credit

See "Engineering Programs."

5. Program/Course Requirements

MSc degree (holding BSc in Engineering):Minimum 5 half-courses and ENEN 601. Normally require ENEN 603 and 605 together with at least one of ENEN 621, 623, 625 or 627. Students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees may be required to take additional prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level.

MEng degree (holding BSc in Engineering):ENEN 601 is not required. Minimum 5 half-courses for the thesis route. Normally require ENEN 603 and 605 together with at least one of ENEN 621, 623, 625 or 627. The requirement for course-based MEng degree is 10 half-courses. Students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees may be required to take additional prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level.

PhD degree (holding BSc and/or MSc degree(s) in Environmental Eng):Minimum 3 half-courses and ENEN 601. Normally require at least one of ENEN 621, 623, 625 or 627.

PhD degree (holding BSc and MSc degrees in Engineering, but not in Environmental Eng):Minimum 4 half-courses and ENEN 601. Normally require ENEN 603 and 605 together with at least one of ENEN 621, 623, 625 or 627.

PhD degree (holding BSc in Engineering, without completing a master's degree):Minimum 8 half-courses and ENEN 601. Normally require ENEN 603 and 605 together with at least two of ENEN 621, 623, 625 and 627.

6. Additional Requirements

All full-time Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy students are required to register and participate in the Research Seminar course, Environmental Engineering 601, in each of the Fall and Winter terms.

7. Credit for Undergraduate Courses

Not applicable

8. Time Limit

Expected completion time is two years for the Master of Science degree, and three years for students entering the Doctor of Philosophy with a Master's degree. Maximum completion time is four years for the Master of Science degree and Master of Engineering (thesis-based) and six years for the Master of Engineering (course-based) and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

9. Supervisory Assignments

All students are required to have a thesis supervisor before the second annual registration. For students in the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree programs, a supervisor is normally appointed at the time of admission.
