1. Degrees and Specializations Offered

The University offers an interdisciplinary specialization in Reservoir Characterization to students registered in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering or the Department of Geology and Geophysics. The student will receive the degree offered by the home program.

Master of Engineering (MEng), Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering

Specialization: Reservoir Characterization (Interdisciplinary)

or

Master of Science (MSc), Department of Geology and Geophysics

Specialization: Reservoir Characterization (Interdisciplinary)

2. Admission Requirements

In addition to Faculty requirements, the specialization requires that all applicants meet the minimum standards of the home program.

Master of Science

1. Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Geology or Geophysics plus Petroleum Engineering (ENPE) 507: Well Logging and Formation Evaluation, or equivalent

2. Proficiency in mathematics

3. Industry experience and continuing education courses will be taken into consideration

Master of Engineering

1. Bachelor of Science in Oil and Gas Engineering, or equivalent

2. Proficiency in mathematics

3. Industry experience and continuing education courses will be taken into consideration

3. Application Deadline

The deadlines for the submission of complete applications are:

15 January for September admission and funding

30 April for September admission only

4. Advanced Credit

The applicant must make advanced credit requests as part of the admission process. Credit will not be given for course work taken as part of another completed degree/diploma or for courses taken to bring the grade point average to a required level for admission.

5. Program/Course Requirements

In addition to the Faculty requirements, the Specialization requires:

(a)Five full-course equivalents, with a minimum of six half-courses at the graduate level. There may be additional course requirements for students with non-engineering or science backgrounds or engineering students from a branch of engineering other than petroleum engineering.

(b)Students are required to take five half-course equivalents from the two fields that are not part of their undergraduate degree.

Engineering students will select two full-course equivalents in approved petroleum geology and geophysics topics, of which a minimum of one half-course equivalent must be at the graduate level. They must also take Geophysics 559: Geophysical Interpretation.

Geology and Geophysics students must take Petroleum Engineering 523: Introduction to Reservoir Engineering; Petroleum Engineering 525: Waterflooding; and Geology 613: Flow in Porous Media in the first year. In addition, Geology students must complete Engineering 407: Numerical Methods; and Geophysics 559: Geophysical Interpretation. The Geophysics students must select one full-course equivalent of Geology options to complete the complement of first year courses.

(c)All students are required to take Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics 691: Project Team Building and Interpersonal Skills, during the first year.

(d)During the common second year, students will take the following:

Reservoir Characterization (RSCH) 621: Reservoir Simulation for Reservoir Characterization

Reservoir Characterization 661: Geostatistics for Reservoir Characterization

Reservoir Characterization 692: Capstone Project Course

7. Credit for Undergraduate Courses

Students may apply for no more than four 500-level courses for graduate credit, subject to the approval of the Program Director.

8. Time Limit

Expected completion time is two years. Maximum completion time is six years.

Students applying for scholarships must submit their applications to the home program by the home program's deadline.

14. Other Information

Given the limited resources, the specialization may, in any year, admit fewer applicants than those who are qualified to undertake graduate studies.
