Asbestos Management Plan


The ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ is committed to the protection of all personnel at university facilities from occupational hazards, including the potential health risks associated with exposure to airborne asbestos fibres. The university's (AMP) has been developed to actively manage all identified asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in university-owned facilities and activities which may disturb ACM including maintenance, renovation, demolition, or repair activities.

Disposal of Asbestos-containing Equipment

Departments with asbestos-containing equipment (e.g. heating plates, kilns, ovens, etc.) are responsible for disposing of these materials by completing a , followed by the submission of an . The cost for disposal of these materials is the responsibility of the department.

Asbestos Resources

The ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½â€™s Asbestos Management Plan outlines responsibilities with respect to asbestos-containing materials within University owned buildings. 

Responsibilities of External General Contractors:

  • are only approved to conduct low-risk, small scope work activities where asbestos-containing materials may be impacted, using either University or company-specific safe work instructions as directed by the University.
  • provide Asbestos Awareness training to employees.
  • maintain a code of practice governing the selection, maintenance and use of respiratory protective equipment.
  • follow Alberta OH&S legislation and University contractual requirements.
  • maintain competent and qualified employees.
  • if required, transport asbestos waste according to the Transportation of Dangerous Good legislation and the Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual.
  • if required, dispose of asbestos waste as specified in the Guidelines for the Disposal of Asbestos Waste by Alberta Environment, and the Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual. 
  • complete and maintain ISNet World requirements.
  • report any asbestos exposure incidents to University Representative, and participate in Environment, Health & Safety led investigations.
