2017 Award Recipients
As this academic year comes to an end, it is our pleasure to announce the recipients of The President’s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership for 2017. This award was established in 2008 to recognize exceptional students who have a record of academic achievement, consistently demonstrate leadership, and make significant contributions to our community.
Nilufer Hasanova, Bachelor of Nursing (with Distinction)
Combining her passions for improving children’s health and the quality of students’ experiences, Nilufer Hasanova has impacted communities both locally and abroad. Earning a Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship, Nilufer participated in a three-month maternal health internship in hospitals and villages in and near Kampala, Uganda in partnership with the Aga Khan University. On campus, she has supported student success through a number of contributions including as the Faculty of Nursing representative for the Students’ Union, a community advisor for students in residence, a mentor through the Emerging Leaders Program and senior tour guide for Campus Tours.
Nilufer participates in various clubs including the Azerbaijan Students Association, Passion 4 Play and organizing the Flying Doctors of Canada on campus. She is focused on perinatal research, and has presented her papers at Canadian and international conferences. Nilufer volunteers with the university’s Fitness Rehabilitation program, the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth and Kids Cancer Care, and has founded her own non-profit organization Hope for Home, providing financial support to orphanages in developing countries.
