4.28.3 Combined BA (French)/BEd (Master of Teaching)
Introduction

This five-year program leads to a Bachelor of Education (Master of Teaching Program) from the Faculty of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in French from the Faculty of Arts.  A minimum of 25 full-course equivalents must be successfully completed.

Present certification requirements of the Province of Alberta can be satisfied.  When planning courses, students should take into consideration Alberta Teacher Certification Requirements. For details, refer to the Faculty of Education website.

Admission

Students initially enter the French program in the Faculty of Arts and, therefore, must meet the admissions requirements for the Faculty of Arts as specified in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar.

The combined BA (French)/BEd (Master of Teaching) program starts after second year and lasts for three additional years. To be eligible, students must meet the following requirements by the end of the Winter term in the year in which they apply:

(a) A minimum of 3.5 full-course equivalents of university-level French courses as required in the French BA in the Faculty of Arts.

(b) Additional courses sufficient to add up to 10.0 full-course equivalents, which meet the Faculty of Arts requirements listed below.

(c) A Faculty of Education "Statement in Support of Application" which includes names of three referees.

Applications are due before the end of Winter term.  For admission deadlines refer to the Applications for Admission Schedule in this Calendar.

The number of students admitted into this combined program each year is limited.  Applicants should refer to A.2 "Admission Requirements" in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar for information regarding admission to the Faculty of Education.

Programs Structure

The program is divided into a French portion, which consists of 7.5 full-course equivalents plus an additional 7.5 full-course equivalents chosen to fulfill the Faculty of Arts Graduation Requirements, and an Education portion, which consists of 10 full-course equivalents. In Year 5 of the Combined Degree program, a required interdisciplinary project course in French will amalgamate the students' academic experience in French and Education.

At the time of admission, a joint committee in French and Education may stipulate special requirements related to linguistic proficiency for entering students. Students' progress throughout the program will be monitored by the joint committee. In order to continue into year 4, students must have completed the 15 full-course equivalents required for the initial French/Arts portion of the program (see below) with a minimum GPA of 3.00 over the last ten half courses taken.

A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS FOR COMBINED DEGREES

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B. MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS (FRENCH)

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 7.5 and a maximum of 10.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of French while fulfilling the following requirements:

1.ÌýIntroductory Courses: French 215 and 217 (plus French 213 if entering with French 30)

2.ÌýCore Courses: French 315, 317, 339, 349, 359, 415, 439, 499.10 and 499.11 plus an additional 0.5 full-course equivalents in French at the 400 level.

3.ÌýCapstone Courses: French 515 and 599 plus an additional 0.5 full-course equivalents in French at the 500 level.

C. OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Linguistics Requirement: Linguistics 201 and 203.

RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE

First Year: French 215 and 217; Linguistics 201 and 203; 1.0 full-course equivalents from the Faculty of Science at the 200 level; 0.5 full-course equivalents in Faculty of Arts options at the 200 level (French 213 is required if entering with French 30); 1.5 full-course equivalents in open options at the 200 level.

Second Year: French 315, 317, 339, 349 and 359; 2.5 full-course equivalents in Open options. A course related to children (such as English 397 or 398, 307, Drama 362, 375, Psychology 351) is strongly recommended. Students must apply for the Combined Degree BA/BEd by the Application Deadline

Third Year: French 415, 439, 499.10 and 499.11 plus an additional 0.5 full-course equivalents in French at the 400 level; 2.0 full-course equivalents in Open options at the 300 level or above; 0.5 full-course equivalents in Open options.

Fourth Year Outline:

  • Learners and Learning/Teachers and Teaching; School and Community/Workplace placements (Fall Term).
  • Curriculum Studies (areas of specialization and interdisciplinarity), Curriculum Contexts, School placements (Winter Term).
  • French 515 in either Spring Term (before Fourth Year or after Fourth Year) or Winter Term (Third Year or Fifth Year).
  • French 500-level Half course (Winter Term).

Fifth Year Outline:

  • Praxis (Case Tutorial, School Placement) (Fall Term).
  • Integration (Case Tutorial, Special Topics Seminar) (Winter Term).
  • Interdisciplinary project combining student interests in teacher education and another field of study related to French. French 599 (Half-course).
