1. Summary of Degree Programs

The Werklund School of Education offers two undergraduate degree options:

  • a five-year concurrent (direct-entry) program and
  • a two-year consecutive (after-degree) program for holders of approved degrees.

All students must choose a route - elementary route (kindergarten through grade 6) or secondary route (grades 7 through 12) and a specialization:

  • Early Childhood Education – Elementary Only
  • English as an Additional Language – Elementary Only
  • English Language Arts

  • Inclusive Education – Elementary Only

The Werklund School of Education, in collaboration with the Faculties of Arts, Kinesiology, and Science, offers a five-year concurrent (direct entry) program. Upon completion students will graduate with two degrees, a Bachelor’s degree in their chosen academic field and a Bachelor of Education.

It is expected that students will study full-time for five consecutive years. Studying on a part-time basis is not possible in the BEd program without the express permission of the Associate Dean.

Concurrent Degree Program
Introduction

The Werklund School of Education in partnership with the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Kinesiology offers a number of five-year concurrent degree programs. Students complete three years with the Faculties of Arts, Sciences or Kinesiology and two years with the Werklund School of Education. Students complete Years 1, 2, and 4 in Arts, Sciences or Kinesiology and Years 3 and 5 in Werklund School of Education.

The concurrent program is based on 20 full-course equivalents (120 semester credit hours) of which 10 full-course equivalents (60 credits) are completed within the Werklund School of Education, and 10 full-course equivalents (60 credits) external to the Werklund School of Education. A minimum of 4.0 full-course equivalents (24 semester hour credits) are in alignment with Alberta Education certification requirements based on students' BEd specialization.

It is required that all concurrent students complete Education 201 prior to entering the third year of the concurrent program. Concurrent students who have not completed Education 201 cannot progress to Semester 1 of the BEd program.

BA or BSc (Faculty of Arts)/BEd

BSc (General Mathematics in Education)/BEd

Students must apply to the Werklund School of Education and Faculty of Science for admission to the concurrent degree program. Please refer to 1. Summary of Degree Programs for a list of eligible majors. Consult the Faculty of Science section of this Calendar for details of their program.

BKin (Leadership in Pedagogy and Coaching)/BEd

Students must apply to the Werklund School of Education and Faculty of Kinesiology for admission to the concurrent degree program. Please refer to 1. Summary of Degree Programs for a list of eligible majors. Consult Faculty of Kinesiology section of this Calendar for details of their program.

BMus (Music Education)/BEd

This program is designed for students intending to teach music (both instrumental and choral) in schools. Students must apply to the Werklund School of Education and the Faculty of Arts for admission to the concurrent degree program. Please refer to 1. BSc (Natural Sciences)/BEd

BFA (Visual Studies or BFA (Drama Education)/BEd
