Course Load

In the Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge BSW, the normal course load is 15 units in Fall and Winter.

In the Community-Based Learning Circles and Virtual Learning Circles BSW, the normal course load is 9 units in Fall and Winter.

All students are strongly encouraged to complete their Social Work 500 level courses during Spring and Summer.

Enrolling in more courses than the recommended load may represent substantial burden and could negatively impact overall performance. Students wishing to complete more than the normal load must receive permission from the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs. Permission will not be granted for the admission term.

Accuracy of Registration

All students are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of their registration and for arranging their course selections to meet all program requirements as detailed in this Calendar.

Transfer Credit From Other Institutions

A maximum of 6 units of Social Work courses will be allowed for transfer credit.

Prior to registering for courses at another post-secondary institution, students must submit a Letter of Permission (LOP) request via their Student Centre and receive approval. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Student Services prior to submitting their request. Students must ensure that an official transcript is sent to the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ Admissions Office upon completion of the course(s), to have the transfer credit applied to their ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ record. For more information see section B.12 Residency Requirements, Letters of Permission and Leaves of Absence.

Interruption of Program Leading to a Degree

Students who stop-out (do not register in any ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ courses) for a 12-month period or more, will be required to apply for admission and comply with any regulations and curriculum changes that may have come into effect during their absence. See section B.12 for more information.

Other Requirements

Most courses have an online component. In order to take advantage of this, students must be familiar with navigating the Internet and have access to a computer. Some courses may be available only online. Online courses may be taught with synchronous (real-time) classes using a web-conferencing platform or asynchronously. Email is routinely used to distribute course, program and faculty specific information to students. A ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ email account is required. Small computer labs are available for student use in Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge.
