Graduate Certificates in Advanced Nursing Practice
1. Certificates Offered
  • Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I
  • Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II

Specializations:

  • Contemporary Topics in Aging
  • Innovations in Teaching and Learning
  • Leadership for Health System Transformation

Students must pick a different specialization in each of the two certificates.

Laddered Certificate Pathway to the Master of Nursing

Students who successfully complete one specialization of the Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I and a different specialization of the Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II will be eligible to apply for admission into the Laddered Certificate Pathway to the Master of Nursing (course-based) degree and will receive credit for the 24 units of coursework completed. Applications must be received within two years of completion of the Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II.

Program delivery: blended format, which includes both face-to-face and online learning.

2. Admission Requirements

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ admission requirements, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I

a) Normally, a ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ four-year baccalaureate degree in nursing or an equivalent degree from a recognized institution. Degrees and grades from foreign institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½;

b) A minimum GPA of 3.00 (on the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ four-point system). This is based on the last two years of post-secondary study consisting of a minimum of 60 units;

c) In order of priority, preference will be given to applicants who: 1) hold an active nursing registration in the Province of Alberta; 2) hold an active nursing registration in a Canadian province or territory of employment; 3) international students. Applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree in another health profession may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis;

d) For applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in English: a minimum TOEFL score ofÌý97 (Internet-based test); IELTS score of 7.0; MELAB score of 83; Level 3 on the International Foundations program () with a minimum grade of "B" on Academic Writing & Grammar III, "B" on Reading Comprehension & Proficiency III, and "B" on Listening Comprehension & Oral Fluency III ().

Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II

a) Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I with a minimum GPA of 3.0;

b) A minimum GPA of 3.00 (on the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ four-point system). This is based on the last two years of post-secondary study consisting of a minimum of 60 units;

c) In order of priority, preference will be given to applicants who: 1) hold an active nursing registration in the Province of Alberta; 2) hold an active nursing registration in a Canadian province or territory of employment; 3) international students. Applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree in another health profession may be considered for admission on a case by-case basis.

Note: International students from around the world are eligible to apply for admission provided they meet the admission and professional licensure requirements

4. Advanced Credit

Not given.

5. Course Requirements

Graduate Certificates in Advanced Nursing Practice I and II

Each of the graduate certificates consist of 12 units of coursework. Course requirements are determined by the specialization.

Students must pick different specializations in each of the two certificates (i.e., a student cannot repeat the specialization that they completed in the first certificate when they enrol in the second certificate).

6. Time Limits

The expected completion time for each graduate certificate is 12 months. The maximum completion time for each graduate certificate is 2 years.

7. Supervisory Assignments

No supervisor will be assigned for the Graduate Certificates in Advanced Nursing Practice I and II.

8. Financial Assistance

No financial assistance is available for this part-time program.
