1. Credentials Offered

Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice

Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice

Laddering from Graduate Certificate to Graduate Diploma

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice may receive credit for the 12 units of coursework completed in the certificate program, if they are subsequently accepted to the Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice program.

2. Admission Requirements

Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ admission requirements, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

a) A BSc in Engineering or equivalent.

b) A minimum GPA of 3.00 (on the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ four-point system) calculated on the most recent 60 units of completed course work.

c) Holders of BSc or equivalent degrees in Science, Medicine or Kinesiology, if accepted, may be required to take additional senior undergraduate engineering courses. These courses will not be counted for credit toward their graduate program. Holders of bachelor’s degrees from disciplines other than Engineering, Science, Medicine or Kinesiology are required to complete a minimum of 30 units undergraduate engineering courses with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a four-point scale before admission.

d) Two reference letters.

e) Minimum of three years of work experience in engineering or a closely related field.

f) Resume or CV.

In exceptional circumstances, students who do not meet the entrance requirements (but have BSc degrees in the same or equivalent Engineering discipline and a GPA of at least 2.70) may be considered for admission after upgrading requirements have been met. Upgrading requirements include a minimum of 18 units of coursework with a minimum grade of 3.00 on a 4.0-point scale in each course. At least 6 units of these courses will be at the graduate level. Upgrading courses will be prescribed by the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) or designate in those instances where they are required.

Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ admission requirements, all applicants must have completed the Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a four-point scale. Students must apply to the Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice within 2 years from the beginning of the Graduate Certificate program.

3. Application Deadlines

Students who wish to use the certificate as a pathway to "ladder" into Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice must apply at each stage and upon successful completion of each program receive a credential.

4. Advanced Credit

No advanced credit will be allowed in the graduate certificate program. For the graduate diploma, the only advanced credit that will be considered is from the coursework in the graduate certificate program via the laddering pathway.

5. Course Requirements

Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice

The Certificate requires 12 units of coursework:

6 units of core professional and leadership courses:

  • Engineering Leadership 601
  • Engineering Leadership 603

Plus 6 units of technical courses from one thematic area.*

Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice

In addition to the 12 units completed in the Graduate Certificate in Engineering Leadership and Advanced Practice, the Diploma requires 12 units of coursework:

6 units of core professional and leadership courses:

  • Engineering Leadership 605
  • Engineering Leadership 607

Plus 6 units of technical courses from one thematic area.*

*Note: students will not be permitted to combine technical courses across themes; both technical courses for the certificate program and for the diploma program must be within a single theme. Students may not take the same thematic area courses in the Graduate Certificate and the Graduate Diploma. However, if a thematic/technical area has more than one theme (e.g. Power System Engineering, Project Management), then students could complete one theme in the certificate program, and the other theme in the diploma program.

6. Credit for Undergraduate Courses

The Schulich School of Engineering will not accept credit for undergraduate courses towards the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice.

7. Time Limits

The expected completion time for the Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice is one year, and the maximum completion time is two years.

8. Supervisory Assignments

A Coordinator is assigned to each cohort in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma.

9. Financial Assistance

Financial assistance is not generally available to students in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Leadership in Engineering and Advanced Practice.
