3.6.1 Student Standing and Academic Review
Satisfactory Academic Standing

All students’ academic standing will be reviewed after each Winter Term. All ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ credit courses, which have been completed since the previous review, are used for the academic review.

Students who have successfully completed all courses with a minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA are in satisfactory academic standing.

Students must have successfully completed all the Year 1 BEd (400-level) courses with a minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA prior to proceeding to Year 2 BEd (500-level) courses.

Unsatisfactory Academic Standing

Students are referred to section F.7 on Unsatisfactory Standing in the Academic Regulations section of this Calendar for more information.

All students’ academic standing will be reviewed after each Winter Term. All ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ credit courses, which have been completed since the previous review, are used for the academic review.

Students who have achieved a cumulative GPA of less than 2.50 are considered to have an unsatisfactory academic standing in the Werklund School of Education and will be placed on academic probation for one year.

Year 2 concurrent students will not be allowed to proceed into Year 3 of the concurrent program (Year 1 of the BEd) unless they have a minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA and 10 full-course equivalents.

Students who fail a course in the BEd program are considered to have an unsatisfactory academic standing. Students who receive a failing grade in any semester will be required to present evidence of having made an attempt to overcome previous difficulties before they will be permitted a second registration in that course.

Students' academic standing may be reviewed at any time and students with poor academic standing may be:

  • placed on academic probation,
  • allowed to continue on academic probation, or
  • required to withdraw from the program

at the discretion of the Associate Dean.

Academic Probation

Students who have an unsatisfactory academic standing will be placed on academic probation for a period of one year.

  1. If students have achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 but less than 2.50 over all courses taken since their previous academic review, they will be placed on academic probation for one year.
  2. If students have failed a course in the BEd program, they will be placed on academic probation for one year.
  3. If students have achieved a cumulative GPA of less than 2.00, they will automatically be withdrawn from the BEd program.

Students placed on academic probation or required to withdraw from the program will be advised in writing.

Reinstatement to Satisfactory Academic Standing
  • If students on academic probation have achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher over all the courses taken since their previous academic review, they will be reinstated to satisfactory academic standing.
  • If students have successfully completed the course/semester in which they received a failing grade, they will be reinstated to satisfactory academic standing and they may proceed to the next semester.
Required Withdrawals
  1. If students are on academic probation and have achieved a cumulative GPA of less than 2.50 over all courses taken since their previous review, they will be required to withdraw from the BEd program.
  2. If students on probation receive a second failing grade, they will be required to withdraw from the BEd program.

Students required to withdraw will be advised in writing.

Mitigating Circumstances

Students who would normally be required to withdraw on the basis of their academic performance or excessive withdrawals may be placed on academic probation instead, if they have experienced serious mitigating circumstances and can demonstrate that they have good prospects for future success. Students who believe that they fall into this category should provide written documentation to the Associate Dean as soon as possible and no later than the end of Winter Term.

Voluntary Withdrawal from Program

Students must notify the Undergraduate Programs Office in writing of their intention to withdraw. After a voluntary withdrawal from the program, students will be required to re-apply for admission.

Readmission

Students who are required to withdraw may not apply for readmission in the twelve month period following their required withdrawal. In addition to the online admission application, students must write a letter to the Associate Dean requesting re-admission to the program.

Students who do not return to the program after their leave of absence will be required to re-apply for admission.

Students who have been required to withdraw from the Werklund School of Education, other Faculties at the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ or other post-secondary institutions due to unsatisfactory academic performance or excessive course withdrawals may be considered for re-admission after 12 or more months have elapsed since they were required to withdraw.

Re-admission is not guaranteed. Applicants must apply by the deadlines stated in the current Calendar and meet the current admission requirements of the BEd program.

Readmission After Unsatisfactory Academic Performance

Students readmitted after having been required to withdraw from the Werklund School of Education due to unsatisfactory academic performance must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.50 on all courses taken in each semester after readmission. Failure to do so will result in permanent withdrawal from the Werklund School of Education.
