Integrated Concussion Research Program
WHAT IS THE ICRP?
The Integrated Concussion Research Program (ICRP) is a university-wide initiative to study concussion, which has brought together experts from the ,ÌýFaculty of Kinesiology, and , with support from the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute () and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute ().
THE STORY OF THE INTEGRATED CONCUSSION RESEARCH PROGRAM
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM THE ICRP IS ADDRESSING?
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), including concussion, is a common occurrence. In Canada, approximately 450,000 concussions occur per year. Unfortunately, concussions can be difficult to detect and diagnose and can result in long-term problems. The ICRP was developed to address the growing concern about concussions, better the lives of those who have experienced these injuries, and prevent concussions for upcoming generations.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM?
The ICRP will answer critical questions in five domains:
Prevention
Who sustains concussions, and what can be done to prevent concussions from occurring in the first place? Â
³¢¾±²Ô°ìÌý&²µ³Ù;&²µ³Ù;
Diagnosis
What are the best methods to identify and diagnose concussion?
³¢¾±²Ô°ìÌý&²µ³Ù;&²µ³Ù;
Prognosis
How do we predict which individuals will recover fully and which will experience persistent problems after concussion?
³¢¾±²Ô°ìÌý&²µ³Ù;&²µ³Ù;
Mechanism
What is the underlying brain injury associated with concussion and what does it suggest about possible treatment?
Rehabilitation
What are the most effective means of managing concussion, from acute medical treatment to rehabilitation of persistent problems?
