Student Employee Types

The ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ is able to hire students in a variety of employment types.  Some will fall under the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) and others will fall under the Graduate Students Association (GSA).

Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)

Student employees that support the operations of the university and fall under the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.

This position is engaged to work shifts no less than three (3) hours per shift, and no more than 22.5 hours per week during the fall and/or winter semester(s).

Student employees must be registered in one (1) ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ course or more, or registered as a Graduate Student at the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½.

From May 1 to September 15 and December 1 to January 15, active Canadian students can work up to full-time hours.  International students have different provisions.

They must be employed under phase 1 of a job family listed on the AUPE Collective Agreement.

These appointments can be funded by operating fund (operating employees) or project fund (fixed term employees). 

Individuals who are not current ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ students can be employed to work hourly shifts that can either be for a period of 20 shifts (to replace an employee during their absence) or a period of 30 shifts (augment the regular role).

This role can be funded by an operating fund (operating employee) or project fund (fixed term employees).  

Graduate Students Association (GSA)

Graduate student employees that support teaching and research at the ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ and fall under the Graduate Students' Association (GSA) Collective Agreement.

Graduate Assistant Research (GAR) appointments are offered to ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ graduate students.

This is an appointment made out of funds helpd by a Researcher to assist with their research responsibilities.  These duties, distinct from the Graduate Student's program of study, may include collecting research data, interviewing research subjects, conducting bibliographic work, performing general research services and carrying out academic projects.

These appointments are fully funded by project salary. 

Graduate Assistant (Teaching) appointments are offered to ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ graduate students.

An appointment to assist with the instructional responsibilities of departments.  The duties may include teaching or instructional service, lecturing assistance, laboratory supervision, being available for office hours, grading assignments, providing tutorial direction and assisting in the preparation of demonstration and instructional aids.

These appointments are operating funded which include 50% scholarship and 50% salary.  

Graduate Assistant (Non-Teaching) appointments are offered to ²ÝÝ®ÎÛÊÓƵµ¼º½ graduate students.

An appointment made out of funds normally held by the Department Head or equivalent to assist departments and/or academic staff with research responsibilities.  The duties, distinct from the Graduate Student's program of study, may include collecting research data, interviewing research subjects, conducting bibliographic work, performing general research services and carrying out academic projects.

These roles are operating funded which include 50% scholarship and 50% salary.
