Code of Conduct
The University's ("Code") communicates the University's expectations with respect to the behaviour of Academic Staff Members, Appointees, Employees (including Postdoctoral Scholars), Volunteer Appointees and Student Employees.
The University is a public agency subject to Alberta's Conflict of Interest Act. As such, the University's Code must:
- require impartial conduct
- prohibit acting in self-interest or furthering interests by virtue of one's position
- require disclosure of real and perceived conflicts of interest
- place limitations on individuals holding concurrent employment or other offices
- include a process for dealing with violations of the Code
The University recognizes that as part of their pursuit of the University's academic mission, members of the University community will be involved in activities or arrangements that raise the potential of actual or perceived conflicts of interest. In light of this, conflicts may be permitted, but only where they have been disclosed in accordance with the University's Procedure for Conflict of Interest, and only if they can be managed in a way that withstands reasonable and independent scrutiny, in compliance with applicable laws, and protects the interests and reputation of the University.
All Employees and Academic Staff Members are required to have read the Code, and to report perceived or actual conflicts in accordance with the Procedures as and each time they arise. This obligation is ongoing.
In addition, annual disclosure obligations apply to SLT members and certain non-academic staff members. The deadline to complete the annual disclosure is around January 31 each year.
Researchers: There are additional conflict of interest obligations for researchers in the Research Integrity Policy, which are separate from the Code.
